This was the first piece of digital art I created. I used Clip Studio Paint and a Huion GT-191 Pen Display.

Preliminary Sketches
I decided to do the sketch in my sketchbook and then scan it in, so this is the base I used to begin my digital adventure.

Getting to grips with link work

Creating the line work was fun, the undo button was a game changer. I made an opnion skin layer from my sketch and then used the felt pen to slowly trace my lines, diverging from the original sketch as needed.

It took me a while and I had some help from my friend who I borrowed the Pen Display from, to figure out how to get the line weight variation calibrated nicely.

Colouring

To handle the colouring I tried to use the paint bucket tool but I realised this was never going to be perfect. What I actually ended up doing was using it for blocking in large areas to get my mid tones down. Moving the linework layer to the top meant I could then go in and, using the gouache brush, handle my shading ensuring any gaps were filled and adding depth and detail.

I probably used for too many layers in the end but it let me rework any section I needed to and go back and improve aread as I learnt new techniques.

In the end I mostly used the goauche brush, for trying to get the last smooth blends I used the dry gouache brush and then the gouache blender as I found it easier when the brush didn’t lay down as much paint.

Its all in the details

For the shorts and blazer I grabbed some textures from Unsplash, the one I used was this nice fabric texture made by Jeremy Bezanger. I used the magnet tool and the free transform to get the fabric to curve around and give more depth. To help it look like it actually is bending with the curves.

I worked on the watch, photo and patch last. The photo I made as if I were just working on another, quicker, piece then used the free transform again to skew it, making it look like its actually lying on the rock face. This was a lot easier than trying to draw the person in the perspective I needed to begin with. Similarly I created the rocket then pulled it round to look like it was following the curve of the sleeve.

My favourite thing about making these was adding the shine to the wach, it was a really small detail but felt like it made a big difference.

Finishing touches
The finishing touches and what brought this all together was a final shading layer, just to fill in any gaps between sections where the shading wasn’t so seemless. Then I added a transparent blue layer on top, this pulled all the colours together and I think gave it a more cohesive feel.

—
With that I was done. Thank you for reading about the creation of my first digital piece, hopefully there will be many more to come and I was really happy with how it ended up so glad I have a chance to share.
